I was asked today about psoriasis. Sharon is covered from head to foot in psoriasis, poor thing. She pointed out that a tube of aloe vera cream would barely cover her body and therefore it would be expensive to try out the treatment for any length of time. True. I suggested that she try one tube and treat a relatively small area of her body rather than all of it. In that way she could apply the cream several times to see if it would help.

The clinical trial that resulted in 83% of patients being cured of psoriasis treated the plaque version, the most common type of psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis covers a relatively small area, usually on the elbows or knees. So Sharon had one of the other types of psoriasis that cover her whole body. Aloe vera cream could still help of course, but she didn’t want to spend a small fortune of enough tubes to treat all her body. If she finds the cream helps, then it will give her the confidence to buy more and treat all her body.

I saw an interesting Horizon programme on TV last night. The Barker Theory says that a baby’s weight at birth will determine his or her health during their life, and will also determine the normal lifespan. Babies with a low birth rate will be more likely to suffer from heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other serious illnesses later in life. Prof Barker published his theory more than 20 years ago and many studies have since confirmed his theory as being correct.

Birth weight is determined mostly by the nourishment the baby receives from the mother whilst in the womb, although if the mother smokes during pregnancy that is known to reduce birth weight. So it is vitally important that women themselves try to take in as much nourishment as possible during pregnancy as this will determine how much reached baby. There is no better way to achieve that then to drink aloe vera gel which is packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It is also an important natural source of folic acid which doctors recommend for mums to be. Aloe Vera In Cosmetics

I’m a man, so I find it hard to understand why women spend so much on cosmetics . However, I can understand the need to try to keep good looks and to ward off the effect of ageing. So it was with some interest that I read about Dr Ivanoff’s hand in Dr Atherton’s article ‘Myth or Magic?’ If you haven’t read the article, here’s the part I am referring to:

It (aloe vera) also possesses the ability to interfere with the enzyme that produces melanin deposits in the skin, preventing the formation of ‘liver spots’ which tend to form in ageing skin. If Aloe Vera is applied regularly and for long enough it will often cause established spots to disappear.

The best demonstration of this effect that I have ever seen, was shown by Dr. Ivan Danhof, an American physician who has worked with topical aloe products in the cosmetic industry for 30 years. When testing new creams and lotions, being right handed, he always applied the material with the fingers of his right hand to the back of his left hand in order to test its texture, smell and penetrability. He now declares that he has one old hand and one young hand and indeed the comparison when he puts his hands together to show the backs, side by side, is quite remarkable. One hand is the typical hand of a seventy year old with thinning, wrinkled skin covered in a variety of blemishes, whilst the other, his left hand, is clear and smooth and looks 30 years younger.

I find that quite remarkable and proof that aloe vera does ward off the effects of ageing.
